Nefes LGBT Azerbaijan Alliance censures the usage of homosexuality by some forces as a tool for uprising. Vice president of Parliament National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Mansour Haghighat Pour’s justification of religious radicalism shows Iran’s position in this matter. Moreover, in the light of this matter, his usage of homosexuality subject is utterly incomprehensible. Using homosexuality as a tool to stir up a revolt in country is political weakness.
Organization’s president Javid Nabiyev commented on Mansour Haghighatpour’s threats to Azerbaijan: “Homosexuality cannot be used as a tool regarding religious matters. Azerbaijan’s LGBT community supports building up a tolerant society, everybody living in peace regardless their religion, sex, sexual orientation or nationality. One of the most oppressed social groups in Azerbaijan is LGBT members. Iranian politician forgot that in Azerbaijan Republic religion is completely separated from government and the country is not ruled by religious grounds. One of the main sources of homophobia is radical religious views. We witness homosexual people facing abuse, violence, execution in countries where religion has turned into violent radicalism. In those countries not only LGBT rights, but also fundamental human rights are not even a matter of discussion. By touching the homosexuality issue the Iranian parliamentarian demonstrated that Iran is against the fundamental human rights. The amount of acts of violence towards LGBT members in Iran is countless. This violence is at the state level.
A year ago on August 22nd the official web-site of our organization was attacked. The persons who obtained the admin information made the site inaccessible. They wrote: “There is no place for you in Azerbaijan! We will destroy all of you!” with Islamic flag in the background. I want to note that as an organization we are against all kind of radicalism. People who will suffer from radicalism first, will be LGBT members. We all witness how ISIS executes homosexuals today.
I hope that, for Azerbaijan not to face those kinds of situations, the law enforcement will fight against these radical groups and prevent them from realizing their repulsive ideas.”
